Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that Birmingham City Council will only lend money to Warwickshire County Cricket Club for ground improvements at Edgbaston if certain conditions are met. This includes meaningful consultation with local residents on issues such as floodlighting, car parking and crowd management.

Local councillors have expressed disappointment about the demolition of the old Battery office building on Bristol Road and called for a good quality replacement when the site is developed. Although the Battery building was not listed, it was a local landmark.

A new Police portacabin was opened by Selly Oak Councillor Alistair Dow on Saturday 18 April 2009. Located in the car park of the Battery Retail Park on Chapel Lane (opposite Sainsburys), the new "cop shop" will be used as a base for the Neighbourhood Policing Team and a venue for Police surgeries.

Selly Oak councillors Robert Wright and Alistair Dow joined other Birmingham residents in the Edwardian Tearoom at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on Friday 6 March to eat Fairtrade bananas. This was part of a nationwide attempt to get into the Guiness Book of Records for the most Fairtrade bananas eaten in a day.
