Local Lib Dems have welcomed news that a £2.7 billion Highways PFI will improve Birmingham's roads and street lights. Councillor Robert Wright said: "It is great news that extra money has been secured to install new street lights across Birmingham over the next five years. Our roads and pavements will also be improved in a rolling programme."

Birmingham City Council has considered a Scrutiny Report on Flood Risk Management and Response in Birmingham. Councillor Robert Wright, who presented the report at the Council meeting on 15 June, said: "I know from personal experience how devastating a flood can be. We wanted to explore how the City Council could better work with partners to tackle flooding and the risk of floods."

Lib Dem Euro MP Liz Lynne has welcomed the European Court of Justice's decision to uphold the EU cap on roaming charges for using a mobile phone abroad in EU countries: "This is great news for mobile phone users and a vindication of the European Union's tough stance to stand up for the ordinary consumer against unfair monopoly profits by huge multinational firms."

Students at King's Norton Boys' School in the Birmingham Selly Oak constituency have voted for the Liberal Democrats. In advance of the actual polling day on Thursday 6 May, the Lib Dems gained a decisive 146 vote majority in the mock election.

The polls following the first ever Party Leaders General Election debate on ITV are showing that Nick Clegg has won a convincing victory over David Cameron and Gordon Brown. The debate was the first ever Leaders debate during a UK General Election campaign, and the pollsters are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.
