Selly Oak councillors Robert Wright and Alistair Dow joined other Birmingham residents in the Edwardian Tearoom at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on Friday 6 March to eat Fairtrade bananas. This was part of a nationwide attempt to get into the Guiness Book of Records for the most Fairtrade bananas eaten in a day. Birmingham became a Fairtrade City in 2005 after Birmingham City Council passed a Fairtrade resolution and committed to actively supporting Fairtrade. Many shops, cafés and restaurants across the city offer a Fairtrade option Fairtrade pays farmers a guaranteed price for their produce. Their contracts allow the producers to have long term planning and sustainable production practices. Related Link:FAB - Fairtrade Association Birmingham.
