Campaign News

Green Switch campaign gets local backing

Selly Oak Liberal Democrats have given their support to the party's plans for a massive shift of taxation from income to carbon use. The average family would pay around £1,000 a year less in income tax, while "green taxes" would encourage the kind of changes we need in order to avert climate chaos resulting from global warming.

Selly Oak Councillor Robert Wright, whose vote at the recent party conference helped to get the new policy adopted, explained that there would be no increase in the level of tax overall. "We should be taxing good things - such as income - less, and taxing bad things - such as pollution - more."

The party's proposals would see about 2 million people lifted out of paying income tax altogether, and almost all low and middle income earners would pay less income tax.

At the same time, there would be increased Vehicle Excise Duty on larger, high-emission cars. Aviation would also be subject to higher taxes, with the aim of reflecting the true environmental cost of flights.

Robert Wright has posted some practical tips on reducing carbon dioxide emissions on his website.

More recycling for Selly Oak

Liberal Democrat councillors have welcomed the roll-out of multi-material recycling collections in Selly Oak. Plastic bottles, cans and glass, together with paper and cardboard, will be collected from local homes every fortnight.

"Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign for better recycling collections," said Councillor Robert Wright. "We need to do more as a community to reduce waste."

This expansion of recycling follows the introduction of garden waste collections earlier this year. These will reduce in frequency to once a month over the winter period.

European Parliament News

Anti-discrimination triumph for MEP

West Midlands Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne has welcomed the age discrimination legislation which came into force at the beginning of October 2006. She was responsible for having age included in the European Employment Directive 2000 which forms the basis of the new UK law.

Celebrating the end of the "over-50 employment scrap heap", Liz commented: "My hope is that this will inspire many of the older people who have experienced the scrap heap to make the most of their talents and abilities and feel they can get out there again and prove how much they have to offer."

Liz pointed out that the legislation is good for younger people too, as they can no longer be passed over for promotion simply because of their age.
